Activities
The social integration and socio-economic role of the cultural transfer was faced in a number of activities.
While by way of the newly implemented platform the consortium provides a central instrument to improve the intercultural exchange within Europe, at conferences (Montevideo, Krakow, Prague), with a festival (Marseille) and in several exhibitions (Marseille, Karlsruhe) the OASIS project was presented to the public and an exchange with experts and interested laymen was initiated. Hereby not only the compiled contents were published but a sustainable handling of the cultural inheritance of Europe was promoted. Papers and scientific publications give an idea of the scope and the effect of the activities.
In the → exhibition and presentation segment of the project the partners have compiled exemplary content, applications and presentation forms for electronic media art and cultural content in a digital age.
Real exhibition situations were compared with virtual presentation spaces. Within the physical exhibition context the so called → curatorial tools are utilised. They offer flexible presentations modes. In addition to the specific processing of the databases for an exhibition context (→ Les Instants: Final Exhibition, at → ZKM Karlsruhe: the MindFrames Exhibition) and at →CIANT possibilities for analysing video works were developed. HfG has participated in the exhibitions → KunstComputerWerke and → Long Night of Information Technologies in order to disseminate the knowledge on the OASIS project.
Recognised experts have discuss the issue of preserving the national heritage in the area of Electronic Arts, and will identify the key features of Media art works in conferences and special workshops (see: → Conferences & Workshops).
Les Instants deserves a special mention for its → festivals and the community work included. In addition at the HfG and the AGH content and technologies of the OASIS Consortium were integrated directly into the syllabus. On a highly professional level Montevideo taught basics of the conservation of electronic works of art and at the ZKM Karlsruhe historical questions and modes of conveying electronic media art forms were discussed
In different on-line presentations and a series of events the OASIS Consortium has tried out and demonstrated such settings (comapre to this the → Informal Screenings and the → HGKZ Video Conference. In addition the OASIS Platform contains an archive-oriented prototype for referencing and presentation of electronic art.
The technological foundations for this development are based on streaming media technologies, which are therefore discussed immediately at the beginning of this chapter.
In relation to → streaming technologies the attention to the time factor has to be additionally considered to the visual appearance of the video material. Therefore the technological requirements differ from those elaborated on for the codec tests - despite some specific technological settings obviously already having implicitly been adhered to. The scope of technological possibilities is usually restricted by the selection of streaming server and the utilised operating system.
