MindFrames Research Database

For the exhibition the ZKM's MindFrames research database fulfilled the function of a curatorial tool at two levels.

As part of preparing the exhibition, its complexity and innovative systematic treatment of the data collected enabled broad-based research, something of central importance in elaborating on the theoretical context.

The research database as a fundamental part of the curatorial concept played a prominent role as part of the MindFrames exhibition. It is a clear part of the StudioLabor, which enabled the time-based art of the moving image to be studied and received in a new way.

Thanks to this architecture, custom-designed for MindFrames, the doctrine, ideas and concepts of that age are presented in a high-tech mode.

In order to enable visitors to navigate simply and in concentrated manner through what is in part a very difficult content, it was necessary to reduce the volume of downloadable information. To this end, a new interface was designed to present the MindFrames research database as part of the exhibition.

By extracting basic video, audio and text data, a simple user-friendly volume of reference data was compiled that granted visitors the opportunity to get actively involved in the exhibition and, if they wished, access additional data about the artists and their works.

In connection with MindFrames, the OASIS Platform functioned as a resource that, due to its complexity, offered the unique opportunity to design different interfaces that could be adapted to quite different user groups.

The simplified interface used in the context of the exhibition was thus not primarily destined for scholarly research but spotlighted the media themselves.
