Partner Databases
A special appeal of the OASIS Project was, to connect databases with completely different content and render them searchable by a common system. While the technological bases are elaborated on in the chapter about the → OASIS Platform, here are the implications arising in regards to content. Corresponding to the varied histories of the different partner institutions the database had to adhere to diverse demands. This implies miscellaneous technological solutions. Thus patterns and models emerged, which were not compatible among each other.
To facilitate the desired connectivity in spite of this, all databases were analysed and compared. The results and respectively the review of the OASIS Consortium on the development and function of their systems will be summed up subsequently. The results are presented in the → OASIS Metadata Model
The elucidation of the partners systems shows the cultural diversity and range of the project. In particular, interested institutions that are in the process of considering installing their own media archives should be able to obtain an overview of system possibilities, and be able to assess the practicability of the different options in relation to their own means and objectives.
During this pilot phase only the databases of → CIANT, → Netherlands Media Art Institute, Montevideo/Time Based Arts and → ZKM were connected.
Subsequently and during the main phase it was also possible to link in the systems of the electronic arts festival → Les Instants Vidéo and the → HfG.
Enclosed, the partners will be presenting their databases. In addition to the content descriptions available on the OASIS website, an outline of the technical settings and architectures can be found, before finally the metadata models will be elaborated on.
In this context, it seemed especially important to describe the meta data models separately again, as these played an integral role during the initial stages of the project. Every database had to be analyzed and prescinded before a consensus for a mutual → OASIS Metadata Model could be found.
