HfG MediaWiki
Database for an Art University
At the HfG the OASIS Project is part of the syllabus. The provided content therefore has the traits of research, development and teaching. There are two basic data sources, which serve different functions. Both adhere to the specific requirements which result from the HfGs scope and history.
The fine arts institute provides the → DILPS | Digital Image Library Processing System for in house use, testing purposes and students access.
In addition to the DILPS it was possible to implement a newly developed database into the OASIS Platform. This database is called → MediaWiki and contains diploma theses and creative works and productions of students, alumni and teaching staff of the HfG.
Set up as a web platform, the diploma theses database upgrades the MetaWiki technology and will be referred to just as MetaWiki in the future. The MetaWiki deserves special attention. Read more about the → context.
Based on the Open Source Engine MediaWiki the HfG has designed a platform for web archiving, which expands the common MediaWiki system specifically with semantic metadata components. Thus the produced Wiki web pages are linkable to metadata and therefore searchable. A flexible metadata structure and dynamic extensions, as well as export of metadata as XML-file are possible. The latter facilitates the exchange with other Wiki systems and databases.
Wiki systems are web-based publishing systems, which are freely available as open source software. They provide content and knowledge management systems and contain an open and easily executable user administration. This enables an extensive publishing activity, which allows students, teaching personnel and artists to enter and update information independently and dynamically.
