Netherlands Media Art Institute, Montevideo/Time Based Arts

The collection of the Netherlands Media Art Institute, Montevideo/Time Based Arts (further referred to as Montevideo), reflects the turbulent history of this institute. Apart from the collection of MonteVideo, its predecessor, the Institute also houses the collections of the institutions Lijnbaancentrum (1970 - 1982), TimeBased Arts (1983 - 1994), De Appel (1975 - 1983), and the Institute for Cultural Heritage (ICN). This combination of artists’ initiatives (TBA, De Appel and LBC) and more formal institutes (ICN and the present-day NMAI) makes the collection surprisingly diverse. Next to such renowned artists as Nam June Paik and Gary Hill, it also includes Dutch artists of international fame since the early 1970ies.

To get a large audience acquainted with electronic art, the Netherlands Media Art Institute pursues an active distribution policy for videotapes and media installations. These are presented at national and international festivals, events and exhibitions at various art institutions and are shown for educational purposes. The institute has always played a pioneer’s role in the distribution and accessibility of media art. From the very start the institute has aimed at developing a larger audience for what was initially a very small, new art form. Digitisation and the Internet created new potentials, and they still create new possibilities that concern not only presentation and distribution, but also collection, and help reach a worldwide audience.

Within the OASIS Archive Project the digitisation of the distribution collection on MPEG2 has been completed, excerpts of all the works were produced in Real Media to make the works available via the OASIS Database. Next to the artists’ name, title, year, length, description and other information about the electronic artworks a still and a Real Media sequence are accessible via the OASIS Archive Database.
