OAI | Open Archives Initiative
The OASIS Platform functions similar to OAI | Open Archives Initiative that provides interoperability standards and promotes aims to facilitate the efficient dissemination of content. As a shared media art platform, it was necessary to upgrade the unique identifiers in the OASIS project.
Due to the fact that e.g. identical work titles in the art context depict non-redundant data, but can be created through editions, it was important to explicitly connect sources with the partner institutions and data provider. Therefore, the unique identifiers are comparable with the DNS entry of a web server, rather than with classic identification numbers (Vgl. hierzu XXXXXX).
Primarily though, OASIS abandons directly a central cash infrastructure: One can only cash locally at the partners - meta data is displayed on the OASIS platform, but not buffered.
The OASIS Archive system creators have decided to construct a distributed database architecture system. The reason was caused by the situation prior to OASIS Archive that has looked as follows: there had been several incompatible media art databases, owned by partner institutions: CIANT, HfG, Les Instants Video, Montevideo and ZKM.
Thanks to DB-Adapters, introduced by the OASIS Archive project, different database structures have been integrated through daily cache (database snapshot) generation. Another special module’s (query engine’s) task is to process and translate queries, as well as to unify and translate answers. DB-Adapters deliver responses from partners’ database servers to the middleware layer, accessed then by a front end engine (graphical user interface).
Distributed DB architecture, together with DB-Adapters integrate different database structures into the common OASIS Archive metadata set (Dublin Core based). The translation from local (partners’) structures into common metadata is done just via daily cache (snapshot) generation.
