Festivals
In October 2005, “Open Consultation Part 2” at La Compagnie, Marseilles, where artists and the public discussed issues concerning digital archives with the example of a net-art database created by the artist Isabelle Massu and the developer Nicolas Malevé, “aux2mondes.org” using techniques for the graphical representation of data.
The public was very involved during in the exploration of the subject on memory and all the questions raised by OASIS the 2005 edition of the festival (from September to November in 16 different screening locations).
A web TV broadcast lasting tree days was created for part of the festival which took place in La Friche Belle de Mai in Marseilles. A group of students from Aix-en-Provence Fine Art School conceived this web TV as a research zone for electronic memories; they presented interviews of artists and spectators talking about their memories.
A debate “Arts and new media” with the participation of video artists, poets and art theorists raised the question of the influence of new technologies on contemporary creation and especially the modes of narration. It was broadcasted on the web TV.
During the festival and later in Lyon at the video festival Les Inattendus, Julien Girardot interviewed video artists about their feelings towards the OASIS Project and the subjects of digital archives and web streaming of video art. These video interviews were published on the Internet and designed using the Plotsème (cf http://www.instantsvideo.com/archives/oeuvredutemps/index.php?browse=OASIS%20ET%20MIRAGES). This work shows that many artists are not familiar with the Internet technologies and feel very concerned by the topics of copyrights and broadcasting over the Internet. The younger generation of artists is very enthusiastic about the OASIS Project but we noticed the importance of information and dissemination for a good understanding of the project goals by the public and the artists.
